lyrics

Long Track

A dusty road. The edge of town.
A gate goes up. A gate comes down
To mark a passing shadow
With a rumble and a sigh.
I cross my heart and I hope to die
And listen as those trains roll by.
I wonder how their thunder sounds
Beneath a different sky.

It’s been such a long long time
And the sky is a deep deep blue.
It’ll take such a long long track
To roll on back.

Katie poised as the whistle cries
She's balanced just above the ties
That bind her to this piece of earth
She's catching fire flies in jars.
On colder nights she sees her breath
Each word a ghost, a tiny death
They hang so still then they drift away
And take their place up in the stars.

It’s been such a long long time
And the sky is a deep deep blue.
It’ll take such a long long track
To roll on back.

The ground still waiting for rain
Still holding the promises we’ve sown.
But now I can’t retrace
Out from this field of stones
Back from this path I roam.

They say there's no outbound track
That time and rust they will not give back
Those stolen moments and broken vows
Heat lightning in the night
Old wishes on a star's decent
That's how it goes; that's how it went
with a currency that's all but spent
As the star breaks up in flight.

It’s been such a long long time
And the sky is a deep deep blue.
It’s taken a long long time
And in time we're only passing through.
It’s been such a long long time
How I long for that place I knew.
It’ll take such a long long track
To roll on back...
